The School of Mechanical Science and Engineering at Huazhong University of Technology (MSE@HUST) keeps pursuing their long-term goal of developing international collaboration and education. On Sep 13th, Prof. Philippe Geubelle at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) was invited to MSE@HUST to conduct the first international session of the STAR (“Striving, Teamwork, Agility, Responsibility,” the culture of MSE) academic forum, which was jointly held by the State Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology and National Innovation Institute of Digital Design and Manufacturing. Prof. Fen Zhang, the chairman, attended the event, and Prof. Yuan Gao, a faculty member, hosted the forum.
Prof. Geubelle serves as the Executive Associate Dean of the Grainger College of Engineering and the Abel Bliss Professor in Aerospace Engineering at UIUC, with joint appointments in the Mechanical Science and Engineering Department, Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. His academic presentation, titled “Fast and energy-efficient manufacturing and 3D printing of thermoset polymers and composites using frontal polymerization,” provided a vision of the broad applications of polymer composites and the grand challenges in their manufacturing process, which served as an introduction to the advanced manufacturing technology of frontal polymerization. The seminar also reviewed the mechanisms and advantages of frontal polymerization for miscellaneous manufacturing processes.
During his visit, Prof. Geubelle conducted in-depth discussions with multiple leaders and faculty members at MSE@HUST, including Prof. Jianfeng Xu, Associate Dean in charge of the graduate program, Prof. Rong Chen, Associate Dean in charge of international affairs, and Prof. Tielin Shi, Professor in Mechanical, Electronic, and Information Engineering. The discussions concentrated on the central themes of research, teaching, and student training. Prof. Geubelle introduced his professional experience in establishing and promoting the international campus of Zhejiang University-University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Institute. He mentioned that "the foundation for international collaborations is to conduct research," for which he demonstrated a positive attitude in future collaborations with MSE@HUST in multiple aspects.
The MSE@HUST will persistently improve the academic interactions and connections with international affiliations to broaden the vision of faculty members and students, which is beneficial to the ultimate goal of establishing a world-class institute for Mechanical Engineering.
