Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is a comprehensive research university under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. It is a participant university of the former “985” Project in China, and also one of the first universities approved under the national "Double First-Class" Initiative, China’s “Excellence Initiative” for institutions of higher education. The Institute of Medical Equipment Science and Engineering (IMESE) of HUST focuses on the national innovation-driven development strategy: targeting the global sci-tech frontiers, serving the main economic battlefields, striving to fulfill the significant needs of the country and benefitting people's lives and health. With the multidisciplinary studies across medicine and engineering, the IMESE aims to solve scientific problems in the frontier field of high-tech medical equipment, so as to provide talent pool and technical support for the independent innovation and controllability of China's high-tech medical equipment, leading the national advances in science and technology.

（1）IMESE’s Mission

The IMESE conducts interdisciplinary research on medicine and engineering, so as to form a mechanism for sharing interdisciplinary research talents and results across the university, promoting the multidisciplinary construction of the university. It builds a medical-industrial interdisciplinary talent gathering base and an incubation base for high-tech medical equipment core technologies, spawning a number of high-tech medical equipment industries. The IMESE provides a platform with merging the talent chain, innovation chain and industrial chain, serving the national strategy and regional economic and social development.

（2）IMESE’s Goal

Based on the platform of interdisciplinary research on medicine and engineering, the IMESE builds a mechanism to promote the deep integration of medical institutions, enterprises, universities and research institutes, focusing on the key technologies related to the national urgent medical equipment to carry out technical research and the commercialization of achievements in science and technology. The IMESE strives to bridge the gap among the research, commercialization and clinical applications, providing solutions for the independent innovation and controllability of high-tech medical equipment in our country.

（3）IMESE’s Research Directions

Aiming to the requirement of the high-tech medical equipment according to the national innovation-driven development strategy, the IMESE focuses on advanced diagnostic instruments and equipment, intelligent surgical robots, precision tumor treatment equipment, brain-machine interface and rehabilitation equipment, biomedical materials and life support equipment, and big data platform for artificial intelligence in medicine. The research directions cover advanced medical equipment fields involving medical imaging, detection in-vivo, life support, advanced treatment, health equipment, and etc.
