Magneto-optics describes the interaction of light and matter in the presence of an external of internal magnetic field. It includes Faraday-rotation effect, Magneto-optical Kerr effect, Zeeman effect, Cotton-Mouton Effect, and magnetic circular dichroism. These effects are closely related to the surface/bulk magnetization, the crystal field symmetry, the carrier localization, and the generally spin-orbital-lattice interaction.
In WHMFC, we investigate various physical processes by using these magneto-optical effects, including the carrier dynamics in semiconductor nano-materials, the localized states in rare-earth luminescent materials, and the magnetization of frustrated or multiferroic magnets. In the presence of a 50 T pulsed magnetic field and temperature as low as 4.2 K, the magneto-optical effects are magnified, and new physics or application can be explored.
