Abstract: The increasingly strategic use of patents, and their importance for competitive advantage, poses special challenges for biotechnology firms. A comprehensive and well-implemented patent strategy requires more management involvement and significantly greater expense than a plan that simply focuses on filing and prosecuting applications at the lowest cost. Any sound asset-building activity requires a real investment of time and resources. This article empirically investigates this phenomenon and discusses several topics of particular relevance to patent strategies, including patent application, patent portfolios, alliance and licensing strategy, patent due diligence and blocking strategy.
