Wuhan is a city where many ethnic groups live together. There are 56 ethnic groups in the city, including 55 ethnic minorities, with a total of more than 180,000 people, accounting for 1.4% of the city's total population. Among ethnic minorities, the Tujia population (7.6 million); followed by the Hui (29,000). There are ethnic minorities living in 13 districts of the city.
Wuhan has a long history of religions , including Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism and Christianity .
Wuhan Taoism has the longest history , and its activities can be traced back to the Soochow period of the Three Kingdoms , with a history of more than 1,700 years. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties , Wuchang Changchun Temple 、Wudang Palace , Hanyang Xuanmiao Temple and Hankou Avenue Temple were once called the "Four Jungles" of the Quanzhen Sect of Taoism in Wuhan.
The history of Buddhism in Wuhan is slightly later than Taoism. The oldest ancient temple was built by Cai Xingzong, the governor of Yingzhou in the Liu Song Dynasty in the fifth century AD. Wuchang Toutuo Temple ( Guanyin Pavilion ) and Wuchang Baoen Temple ( Iron Buddha Temple ) built by Liang Shaoling King Xiao Lun . Wuchang Baotong Temple, Lianxi Temple , Hanyang Guiyuan Temple and Hankou Gude Temple are combined are called the famous "four jungles" of modern Buddhism in Wuhan.
Islam was introduced to Wuhan in the Yuan Dynasty and has a history of about 600 years . The earliest mosque is the Wuchang Yuanmenkou Mosque.
Catholicism was established in the 10th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1637 ) , and Christianity was established in 1637. It was introduced to Wuhan in the 11th year of Xianfeng's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1861 ) . Its earliest churches were located at Dadikou in Wuchang and Dajia Street in Hankou.
There are more than 500 religious activity venues in our city, among which the list of religious places lawfully registered and open to the outside in Wuhan is as follows:
