On May 21, the 20th-anniversary and Achievements Exchange Conference of the Model Software Institutes was held in Beijing. Hosted by theLeague of Model Software Institutes,the conference themewas "Review Higher Education Reformsin the New Erawith the Example of Model Software Institutes."The conference was attended by Vice Minister Wang Qiming of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, Vice Minister Wu Aihua of the Department of College Students Affairs, Sheng Xiaoguang of the Science and Engineering Office of the Higher Education Department under the Ministry of Education,Zhang Yaoxue--academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former Minister of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education,Sun Jiaguang--academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of Tsinghua University, Liao Xiangke--academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor ofthe National University of Defense Technology,Lyu Weifeng--VicePresident and secretary-general of the Chinese Software Industry Association and VicePresident of Beihang University, faculty and student representatives from 37 Model Software institutes and over 240 representatives from cooperative enterprises.A delegation led by Dean and Professor of SSE,Li Guohui, attended the conference.

During the meeting, relevant officials and experts reviewed and summarized the establishment and development of the Model Software Institutes over the past twenty years. As apilot zonefor higher education reform, the Model Software Institute shave witnesse dexplorations and practice on talent cultivation models, management systems, and operational mechanisms, thus pioneering a new paradigm for software talent cultivation in China.
Faculty and students who had performed outstandingly during the establishment of the Model Software Institutesover the past 20 years were honored on the conference. Professor Chen Chuanbo, our former Dean, was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award. Additionally, Professor Shen Gang, ViceDean,was awarded as an outstanding teacher by the League of the Model Software Institutes. Kong Miao from the class of 2013was recognized as an outstanding undergraduate, while doctoral student Zhu Yi from theclass of 2021 was recognized as an outstanding postgraduate.

In 2002, the School of Software Engineering recruited the first undergraduates and graduates majoring in software engineering. In 2011,the School was allowed to confer the first-level discipline doctoral degree in software engineering and in 2020 the major was included into the"National First-Class Undergraduate Majors Program." Over the past 20 years, the School has been committed to reforming the cultivation of innovative software talents and has developed a distinct talent cultivation model. It has established a systematic engineering practice ability cultivation system which integrates engineering practical teaching throughout the entire education on undergraduates and graduates, winning the Second Prize for 2022 Excellent Teaching in Hubei Province. The School has achieved excellent teaching results, with four courses including "Software Quality and Testing" being rated as National First-Class Undergraduate Courses. Collaborations with well-known enterprises such as Chinasoft International and NEUSOFT have introduced more than 20 international instructors, while student internships and study programs in the United States, Japan, Singapore, India, and other countries have been organized. A group of high-level innovative talents has been nurtured.Over the past 20 years, the School has cultivated over 3600 undergraduates, more than 2000 full-time doctors and masters, and over 10000 on-the-job postgraduates, providing a large number of outstanding talents for China's software industry and related sectors. The employment rate and quality of graduates have remained among the top of the whole school,having fostered entrepreneurs from innovative software companies such as Juanpi,Sencent, and Zhugeio. Students from the School have won numerous honors such as the Gold Award in the "Internet Plus" and "Chuang Qing Chun" National College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition,the world championin the Microsoft Imagine Cup,the first place in the Citi Innovation Competition, and the championship in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. In 2022, two projects led by SSE students won the Gold Award in the "Internet+" Competition.
