Prof. Xie Xiaolin, Member of the Stranding Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of HUST delivered speech on behalf of the university. He says that the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the fastest growing schools in HUST, which provides a strong disciplinary support for HUST's pursuit of "double first-class" initiative. The slogan of "Curious children learn chemistry", talent introduction and cultivation, international exchange and cooperation have become famous brands of HUST. The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering provides the best undergraduate education, and enables graduate students to stand at the forefront of innovation, making important contributions to supporting the development of engineering and medical sciences.
Prof. Xie mentions that the hard work of the elder statesmen makes the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering stand at a new starting point with a new journey. In the new era of development and change, the School should adhere to the principle of fostering virtue through education. It should not only build a team of faculty with excellent political quality, professional ability and high education level, but also guide them to become the great teachers who shape students' character, conduct and taste. It is also necessary to strengthen the cultivation of top talents in basic disciplines, cultivate basic research talents urgently needed for national innovation and development, and build a strong talent base for self-reliance in high-level science and technology. Prof. Qu Jinping, Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Academic Committee of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, delivers a video address. He says that the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has always maintained the spirit of "moving forward regarding difficulties" and "never giving up unless reaching the goal" during the past 40 years, and has made important contributions to the development of chemistry in China. The School has made remarkable achievements in teaching, scientific research and discipline construction. He hopes that all the faculty and students of the School will maintain the attitude of being energetic and courageous, and strive to further promote the development of the School.
Prof. Zhuang Lin, Dean of the School of Chemistry and Molecular Science of Wuhan University, delivers a speech as a representative of peer universities. He affirms the rapid breakthroughs made by the School in the past 40 years, and fondly recalls his school days and old stories with HUST. Prof. Zhuang says that the School of Chemistry and Molecular Science of Wuhan University has forged a deep friendship with the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of HUST in the long-term practice of running a school. In the future development, the two universities will also continue to strengthen exchanges, continue to explore in-depth cooperation in talent cultivation, discipline development, scientific research cooperation and other aspects, unswervingly contributing to the development of the chemistry discipline.
Prof. Tan Bien, Dean of the School, delivers a speech with the theme of “Striving for 40 years and forging ahead in a new era”. In his speech, Prof. Tan reviews the leapfrog development of the School in terms of school running conditions, teaching reform, talent cultivation, scientific research, platform construction, talent team, exchange and cooperation over the past 40 years, and expresses his sincere gratitude and high respect to the predecessors, peer universities, all sectors of society and alumni of the School.
Prof. Tan mentions that the School has always adhered to the goal of fostering virtue through education. It takes talent cultivation as the priority, and guides young students to make great ambitions, be virtuous, become talented and assume great responsibilities. At present, a talent cultivation system with discipline characteristics has been preliminarily formed. The School has always adhered to the tradition of cherishing talents, the concept of "accurate talent identification, sincere talent introduction, scientific talent education, and bold talent utilization", and the principle of "combination of talent introduction and cultivation". It always trusts talents politically, provides academic support, and relieves talents from administrative burden, striving to form a highland for innovative talents. It has always carried forward the spirit of hard struggle and harmonious development, and practiced the concept of "team inheritance, mutual cooperation and common prosperity", so that the traditional chemistry discipline continues to burst out new vitality. In May this year, the School organized a special activity of "Salute to You". Staff and student representatives visited more than 10 retired teachers of the School. With the theme of "One Visit, One Old Object, One Photo", they listened to the struggle course and touching stories of the retired teachers and made it a special event in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the School. At this conference, student volunteers presented flowers to the retired teachers represented by Xu Huibi, Ma Lifen, Huang Kaixun, Pan Yuecheng, Li Guangxing, Jiang Guofu, Yang Jilin, Yang Yajiang, Ye Cheng, and once again paid tribute to the pioneers and cultivators of the School.
Prof. Wu Yuzhou speaks as the teacher representative. On behalf of young teachers, she paid tribute to the older generation of chemists who started from scratch and worked hard. She will continue to uphold the ideals and beliefs of the seniors who cherish the motherland and serve the people, continue to work together and blaze new trails in the spirit of innovation, working hard for a better tomorrow of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. She says that as a young teacher, she has witnessed the rapid development of the School in recent years, and is glad to grow up with the School. Standing at the new historical starting point of the second century goal, as a young scientific and technological worker, the young faculty will bravely shoulder the sacred mission entrusted by the times, educate students for the Party, cultivate talents for the country, and contribute hard core scientific and technological strength to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Zhao Yajun, a doctoral student enrolled in 2017, delivers a speech as the student representative. Based on his own experience, he reviews his ten years of study in the School. From exploring the mysteries of chemistry to strengthening the path of chemical research, he witnesses the changes of the School over the years from the perspective of students. Zhao Yajun, on behalf of the vast number of students of the School, says that the new generation of chemical youth would keep in mind the teachings of the Party, aspire to national rejuvenation, rely on the broad development platform of the Academy, be down-to-earth and practical, and shoulder the historical mission of becoming a chemical power.
In June 2020, Xiao Fengwei, the undergraduate alumnus of the School enrolled in 1986 and chairman of Guangzhou Zhaolong Import and Export Trade Co., Ltd., joins with Wang Mingzhong, the general manager, to express gratitude to his alma mater, and donates RMB 1 million to the School on behalf of Guangzhou Zhaolong Import and Export Trade Co., Ltd. In September this year, Sun Zhuoming, the undergraduate alumnus enrolled in 1996, president of Dawan District Alumni Association and general manager of Guangzhou Houya Chemical Co., Ltd., donates another RMB 1 million to support the construction and development of the School.
In recognition of the concern and support of the two alumni for the development of the School, the proposed lecture hall of the School will be named as Zhaolong Hall and Zhuoming Hall. Zhu Jintao, Dean of the Graduate School of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tan Bien, Dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Xiao Fengwei and Sun Zhuoming, the two alumni, jointly unveil the hall.
After the unveiling ceremony, Sun Zhuoming, Chairman of Guangzhou Houya Chemical Co., Ltd. and President of Dawan District Alumni Association, delivers a speech as the representative of the alumni. Sun Zhuoming says that the strength of alumni is huge. Alumni from all walks of life at all levels can collide with each other in the exchange and cooperation. He hopes that the college and alumni would continue to interact, seek new development in scientific research technology and industrial investment, and better realize the transformation of industry, education and research. At the same time, he says that he welcomes more alumni to join the big family of the alumni association and jointly help the School develop faster and better.
In the end, the choir of teachers and students of our School sing the "School Song of Huazhong University of Science and Technology", pushing the atmosphere of the conference to the climax.
