November 2023 marks the 32nd National Fire Prevention Month in China. In active response to the theme "emphasizing prevention and prioritizing life" of the National Fire Prevention Month in 2023, the Network and Computing Center conducted an emergency fire drill on the afternoon of November 27. This was an effort to ensure the safe operation of the South Six Building and the computer room, as well as to raise fire safety awareness among staff. All faculty and students from the South Six Building participated in the drill.
This drill simulated a fire incident in the computer room with the principles of "prevention first, self-rescue focused, unified command, and division of responsibilities" being adhered to. To ensure the successful completion of the drill, the Network and Computing Center created an action plan in advance and assigned tasks to all personnel. On the one hand, the drill was conducted to test the capability of the operation and maintenance personnel to respond promptly to fire alarms and correctly implement on-site emergency response measures. On the other hand, the drill also serves to exercise the evacuation competence of all personnel, making sure that upon a fire incident, all personnel will remain calm and evacuate in a timely, organized, and secure fashion via the designated fire escape paths to ensure personal safety.
At 14:30 on that day, the staff triggered the smoke detector with a test smoke gun in the underground computer room. The gas extinguishing control panel was immediately prompted to sound an alarm. As soon as the personnel on-duty in the monitoring room heard the alarm, they swiftly verified the exact location of it displayed on the fire control panel, and immediately activated the emergency broadcast and audiovisual alarm system, notifying the people within the building to immediately evacuate in an organized and safe manner. As the evacuation was underway, the fire suppression team members initiated the gas-based fire suppression system through the fire control panel, releasing the gas to effectively extinguish the flames.
In this drill, all participants performed their assigned tasks effectively and efficiently, with emergency firefighting procedures clearly outlined and the evacuation process executing quickly and orderly. This highly practical exercise, with the broad participation of personnel, considerably increased the fire safety awareness among the staff and their readiness to respond and escape in an emergency.
