It is critically important to maintain the systemic acid-base, fluid and salt homeostasis in the body. CO2/HCO3– system accounts for up to 70% of buffering power for acid-base disturbance. The research in my lab focuses on the biophysics and physiology of acid-base transporters, mainly a group of Na+-dependent HCO3– transporters (NBC) of the Solute Carrier family 4 (SLC4). Our research employs approaches of biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular immunology, structural biology, and electrophysiology to investigate the structure and function relationship, mechanism underlying the functional regulation of NBCs, as well as the physiological roles of the NBCs in the body. We are particularly interested in the role of NBCs in renal physiology.
