Professor Shu Xuewen from Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), has been elected as an Optica Fellow, in recognition of his outstanding and sustained contributions to the research and development of optical fiber-based devices, particularly optical fiber grating technology.
Founded in 1916, Optica (formerly OSA) is a global society that works to advance the science and technology of light. This year, Optica has inducted 129 members from 26 countries to the Society’s class of 2024 Fellows, who were selected based on several factors including outstanding contributions to research, business, education, engineering and service to Optica and the community.
Professor Shu Xuewen has dedicated himself to the research in the fields of optical fiber-based devices and laser precision inscription technology, especially fiber grating technology and its applications in optical communications, sensing, and lasers. He has published over 300 papers in prominent international journals and conferences. His papers have received high citations, with one being recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as one of the most influential research papers in the field of lightwave. Professor Shu has filed more than 50 domestic and international patents, with over 30 patents granted. He has successfully led and participated in more than 20 research projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation Program of China, the Royal Society research project of the UK, and the EU Horizon 2020 project. He has delivered over 40 invited talks at international conferences and has served as a committee member for more than 30 international conferences, including the Optica Advanced Photonics Congress and the IEEE International Photonics Conference. He also contributes to the academic community as an editorial board member for prestigious international journals such as IEEE Sensors Letters, Photonics, and Sensors. His outstanding achievements have earned him recognition as a highly cited researcher in China by Elsevier, IOP Fellow (2021), and Optica Fellow (2023).
