A new chapter commenced for the incoming new HUSTers enrolled in the year 2023, who gathered on September 7th in the Optics Valley Gymnasium for the 2023 opening ceremonies.
First held was the opening ceremony for HUST’s undergraduate freshmen enrolled in 2023.
Academician Li Yuanyuan, Chair of the University Committee, attached HUST emblem pins to the representatives of the new students. Meanwhile, the rest of the freshmen enrolled in 2023 put on the emblem pins, signifying their identity as members of the HUST community.
Academician You Zheng, President of the University, addressed the ceremony on the theme of “Pursuing Excellence and Achieving Dreams”. He urged the new HUSTers to forge ahead with HUST’s culture of excellence and shoulder the responsibility entrusted by the new era. You Zheng also hoped that they embrace and uphold the university motto Virtue, Erudition, Truth, Innovation to guide their self-improvement, and strive persistently in pursuit of their aspirations.
Professor Hu Jiabing, Dean of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, encouraged the students to keep their youthful enthusiasm alive and bravely set sail towards the vast sea of possibilities and opportunities.
Representing senior students, Shi Hao, a member of the Student Union Executive Committee and an undergraduate student enrolled in 2020 from the School of Electronic Information and Communications, hoped that the incoming freshmen enrolled in 2023 would discover their better selves at HUST and tackle all challenges with confidence.
Representing the new students was Huang Danni, an undergraduate student enrolled in 2023 from the School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation. She called upon everyone to be the creators of boundless possibilities.
Later in the afternoon, the opening ceremony for HUST’s new graduate students enrolled in 2023 was held.

Academician You Zheng, President of the University, expressed hope in his keynote speech themed “Leading an Outstanding Life through Innovation” that the students would, through innovation and creativity, fulfil the value of their lives.
Representing the faculty was Professor Yang Zhi, a member of the Academic Committee, and the Dean of the School of Management. He encouraged everyone to approach research with meticulous observation and active innovation.
Hao Zichun, representative of the senior students and a graduate student enrolled in 2021 from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, emphasized the need to strengthen research and actively engage in practical experiences.
Representing the new students, Xu Jinzhou, a doctoral student enrolled in 2023 from the Second Clinical School, called upon his fellow students to invest their youthful efforts and to embark on an extraordinary life journey on this vibrant campus.
The ceremonies came to a close as HUSTers chanted the University Song of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, pledging to “unite and advance for the future of HUST.”
