On May 13th, HUST student and Chinese sprint canoeist Sun Mengya claimed the women's canoe double 500m gold in 2 minutes and 1.34 seconds with her teammate Xu Shixiao at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Hungary. Shortly before that, they took home the bronze medal in the women’s C-2 200m.
The pair won the gold medal in women's C-2 500m at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo on 7 August 2021. Now Sun Mengya is studying Sports Training at the School of Physical Education, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
Sun Mengya and Xu Shixiao started in the fourth lane and took the lead with a slim margin from the beginning. Finally, they finished first with a lead of 0.89 seconds over the second finisher.
They spoke after the race, “This medal means not only an affirmation for both of us. It has built our confidence to defend our titles in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”
