The US-China University Dialogue, a side event of the 2022 Annual International Forum on Higher Education, was co-hosted by the China Association of Higher Education (CAHE) and the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan on Nov 26th. The theme of the session was “Mobility, Teaching and Research Cooperation in the Post-Epidemic Era”. Prof. Chen Jianguo, Vice President of HUST attended and addressed the forum.
In the opening speech, Prof. Shi Yigong, Vice President of CAHE, President of Westlake University, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, noted that higher education exchange and cooperation had become the forerunner of people-to-people exchange between the two countries and China-US relations. He continued by saying that both sides should make efforts to explore various forms of cooperation which are opener, deeper, more inclusive, and mutually beneficial forms of cooperation.
Melissa J. Lan, Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General, Wuhan, proposed that the two countries should resume China-US dialogues, expand students and scholars exchanges, and strengthen educational ties and mobility to address global challenges jointly.
Chen Dali, Deputy Director General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education, emphasized that China and the US should engage in more policy-level dialogues, deepen mutual understanding between the young generation, and innovate academic cooperation patterns.
Prof. Chen Jianguo delivered a speech entitled “Deepen International Scientific Research Cooperation to Enhance Global Sustainable Development”. He introduced the achievements and practice on the collaboration between HUST and its U.S. partners in clean energy development, international scientific mega-project, and global public health issues. He also called on institutions in all countries to address universal issues affecting mankind and to facilitate global sustainable development.
In the forum, around 30 other experts and scholars from China and the U.S. discussed in-depth on promoting personnel mobility and enhancing teaching and research cooperation.
By bringing together experts and scholars from both sides, the forum provided a platform where participants had open communications on topics regarding people-to-people exchange, bi-lateral mobility, as well as how to cultivate the next generation with great social responsibilities.
