On November 7th, Professor Dong Nianguo, Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Professor Xia Jiahong and more than 20 medical workers successfully performed heart transplant surgeries for three boys suffering from heart failure from Beijing, Guangzhou and Nanning at Wuhan Union Hospital of Tongji Medical College in 7 hours. Wuhan Union Hospital has now become the world’s first medical institution that carried out the most pediatric heart transplant surgeries in one day.
"It is the first time around the globe that three pediatric heart transplant surgeries were done in the same hospital on the same day," Professor Dong Nianguo said. “Pediatric cardiac transplantation is still a risky procedure, and it would be impossible to perform three such surgeries in a single day without the high level of our team’s professional competence.”
Since 2008, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of Wuhan Union Hospital has carried out a record of 139 pediatric heart transplant surgeries in China. Over the years, under the guidance of Professor Dong Nianguo, it has innovated medical theories, improved heart preservation methods and established a heart transplantation technology system suitable for China’s actual conditions. These achievements have been highly recognized by domestic and international experts, and are said to have advanced the field of heart transplantation in China, especially for children.
