On September 13, a total of 7230 freshmen attended the opening ceremony for the HUST undergraduate class of 2022 that was held in the Optics Valley Gymnasium. Ma Jianhui, the Vice Chair of the University Committee, presided over the opening ceremony. University leaders, heads of schools and departments, faculty representatives, and counselors attended the ceremony.

After the solemn national anthem, all the participants of the ceremony watched the video "Answer", which was dedicated to the new students.

Academician Li Yuanyuan, the Chair of the University Committee, pinned the HUST emblem on the representatives of the new students. Meanwhile, the rest of the Class of 2022 put on the glorious emblems together to signify their identity as one of the HUSTers.

Academician You Zheng, the President of the University, urged the students in his speech on "gaining a strong foothold in the tide of the time and striving to be the vanguard of a strong country", to forge ahead with innovative spirits and to be confident and responsible aspirants. He also hoped that they would always remember the universitt motto "Virtue, Erudition, Truth, Innovation", to stabilize the direction of progress and pioneer in the pursuit of dreams.

Professor Ma Cong from the School of Life Science and Technology, a representative of the teaching faculty, a Distinguished Professor of Central China Scholars, and a winner of the "Excellent Class Teacher" award, expects all new students to stimulate their curiosity, sharpen their flexibility and be successful in life with clear goals. In his speech, he also hoped that they could put their studies into practice, and eventually become the backbone of the country.

Liu Zeqing, a representative of the senior students and a 2018 undergraduate student of the School of Optical and Electronic Information, encouraged the new students to "aim high while stay down to earth and strive for excellence", fostering the aspiration to serve the country, developing the habit of diligence, and learning through practicing. "Youth should burst with stunning vibrancy and great passion", he said.

Zhu Xuan, a representative of new students and a 2022 undergraduate student of the School of Future Technology, called on everyone to advance tirelessly and devote themselves to society, with relentless efforts, team spirit, and pure hearts.

Teachers and students waved the red flags in their hands and sang the University Song of Huazhong University of Science and Technology together, extolling the success of HUST.
