On December 31, 2021, the Forum on Cultural Advancement and Discipline Development and the Launch Ceremony of the 70th Anniversary of School of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MSE) were held at the academic lecture hall of the Advanced Manufacturing Building. President You Zheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Xiong Youlun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Ding Han, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Academic Committee of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) attended the meeting.
You Zheng emphasized the significance of cultural advancement in developing first-class disciplines. While appreciating the profound cultural tradition of MSE, he hoped that the school should continue to give full play to the essence of culture and teachers should always remain true to the original aspiration of training talents with moral integrity.
Xiong Youlun said the university and the school were proud of training numerous outstanding talents who have made great contributions in all sectors. In the future, the school will continue to train high-caliber talents to meet the needs of social and national development.
Ding Han said that a favorable cultural atmosphere was indispensable for MSE to have today’s achievements. Cultural advancement and discipline development are everlasting themes. He hoped that students would make greater efforts to improve their cultural literacy while enhancing professional knowledge step by step.
Gao Liang, Chair of the School Comittee of MSE, gave a thematic report on cultural advancement and discipline development. He highlighted that HUST was the epitome of China’s development in higher education since the founding of the PRC. At the school level, MSE exemplified the development mode of HUST best. The school would carry on the patriotic mantle to improve the school through cultural development and build world-class disciplines with Chinese characteristics.
Yin Zhouping, Dean of MSE, announced Celebration Document No. 1 of the 70th Anniversary of School of Mechanical Science and Engineering.

The meeting announced the establishment of a lecture team on MSE’s history. Yang Rongbai, Li Zhu, and the other 13 retired professors were the first batch of the members. Gao Liang and Yin Zhouping awarded the certificates of appointment to lecturer representatives. Qian Xiangsheng represented the lecture team to give a speech. The lecture team will carry out a series of lectures by stages in order to pass on the culture of the school.
The school has set up an alumni team to create a platform for communication between alumni and students. The members of the alumni team will guide students’ development as their mentors. Academician Tan Jianrong, Academician Yang Huayong, and the other 10 outstanding/excellent alumni were the first batch of mentors. Zhao Ming, Hubei Industry Professor, was present and addressed at the meeting as an alumnus representative. Peng Fangyu, Vice Dean of MSE, awarded the certificate of appointment to him. Li Hongbing, an alumnus mentor and Chair of the mechanic sub-association of Shanghai Alumni Association, sent a congratulatory video to the meeting.
The school has organized a student volunteer team to encourage students to play an active role in cultural advancement and the affairs of the school’s anniversary celebration. Wang Shuting and Xu Jianfeng, vice deans of MSE, awarded the certificates of appointment to volunteer representative. Duan Zheng, Deputy Secretary of the CPC committee of MSE, presented the volunteer team with a flag. Student representative Ma Zifeng gave a speech.
The meeting also witnessed the debut of the microfilm named Keep Going. The film was adapted from true stories of Professor Zhao Xuetian of MSE and the FOCUS team, through which the audience got to know how the mechanic professionals devoted themselves to the workshop and the homeland.
At the end of the ceremony, Xiong Youlun, Ding Han, Gao Liang, Yin Zhouping, Qian Xiangsheng, and Zhao Ming jointly pressed the start button, formally launching the 70th anniversary of the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
Later, Zhao Ming gave the first guidance lecture of “Shining Stars” as the representative of the alumnus mentor team in Room A304 of the east wing of the Advanced Manufacturing Building, School of Mechanical Science and Engineering.
The school has made great progress in the past 70 years and will forge ahead in the new era. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of its foundation, development forums, academic conferences, thematic lectures themed on the 70th anniversary of the school as well as a series of recreational activities will be held.
The event was attended by leaders and representatives of faculty members of MSE, heads of the Anniversary Celebration Office, representatives of retired teachers and students.
