Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is situated at the heart of the Yangtze. For the past seven decades, the river has witnessed the university’s development and achievements as we strove forward against all odds. It is thus, that in October 2022 that HUSTers will welcome the university’s 70th anniversary.

The university traces its roots back to the start of New China, gained new grounds thanks to the reform and opening up, and has since progressed with our nation into this brave new era. It is always honored as “the epitome of China's development in higher education since the founding of the PRC”. HUST has a proud tradition of carrying on the patriotic mantle of our founders, even as we forge ahead in our vision to become an inclusive institute with a global outlook. HUST was established as a center of excellence in education that would provide an endless stream of high-quality talents. Even though our times have changed, our university will never forget its roots, which serve as the foundation for our faculty and students as they strive for academic excellence geared towards the betterment of all humankind. The university’s mission is to train qualified professionals with upright morality. The three education signatures of “Learning in HUST”, “Cultural Quality Education”, and “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education” have become synonymous with high-quality education in China and the global stage. HUST can now proudly boast more than 700,000 distinguished alumni, among whom have won the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award and honorary titles of “People’s Hero”, “Role Model of the Times”, “National Role Model Worker”, “National Ethical Role Model”, to name but a few.

HUST is rooted in society, community, and nation. Our responsibility is to give back and contribute. The university strives to explore the forefront of academia and provide the talents needed to navigate the changing global paradigm into the future. To achieve this mission, the university prioritizes four central paths—cutting-edge technology, economy and commerce, community needs, and the health and safety of all humankind. These ambitious goals are supported by the university’s investments in scientific research, talents and innovation, which, in turn, drives the university forward through friendly competition, real-world applications, as well as determination and daring in the face of challenges. To provide a favorable environment, HUST has established a number of powerhouse facilities, including the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center, National Precise Gravity Measurement Facility, National Innovation Institute of Digital Design and Manufacturing, National Medical Center for Major Public Health Events and other national science and technology platforms. HUST also pays equal heed to community affairs. The university’s active involvement in the national poverty eradication campaign has been recognized with the title of “National Advanced Unit for Poverty Eradication”. And during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, our faculty and students can be seen braving the frontlines, carrying out our mission to “serve the people, the community, the nation, and the world”.

Seventy years have seen HUST grow from infancy to maturity. Moving forward, HUST aims to become an international-tier university. We will continue to forge ahead, guided by the motto “Virtue, Erudition, Truth, Innovation”. Under such auspicious occasions, we hereby extend our sincere invitation for all alumni wherever you are to come home; we also warmly welcome any and all social stakeholders that have supported and inspired us along the way. Please come and join our faculty and students in the celebration of our 70th anniversary as we relive our proud history together with fondness and look to the promising future with hope and confidence.
