The 2020 Annual International Forum for Higher Education was held from November 20th to the 22nd, in Zhengzhou, Henan province, with the theme of Accelerating Modernization of University Governance Systems & Capacity Building.
Yuanyuan Li, Vice Chair of the China Association of Higher Education, President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was invited to attend the opening ceremony and deliver a speech. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of building a first-class university governance system and the realization of high-quality characteristic development. The report focused on three aspects: the university governance system from a global perspective, the value consciousness of university governance and the governance practice of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
In Li's opinion, it is an irresistible trend for universities to follow academic rules and advocate co-governance. First-class universities should stick to the people-oriented approach in running schools and cultivating pillar talents for the society. In terms of scientific research, Li believes that universities should be geared to the frontiers of world science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy and the major needs of the country.
HUST attaches great importance to and ensures the academic governance, implements democratic management, simplifies the work process, and constructs a standardized university governance structure that conforms to the development law of higher education and suits China's national conditions. The university has continued to deepen its reform. It has continuously enhanced its governance efficiency and vitality, and achieved all-round and rapid development by improving the administrative management system, innovating the personnel training mode to build a large platform for scientific research services, cooperating with teachers and students, and guaranteeing logistics services.
The Annual International Forum for Higher Education is one of the brand activities of China Association of Higher Education. Held for 19 years, it is also one of the largest-scale and influential academic events in the field of higher education within China and even the world today. A total of 114 foreign guests from 27 countries and regions and more than 1,200 leaders, experts and scholars from hundreds of universities attended the conference in different forms. For the first time, three parallel forums, namely, University Presidents Forum, Scholars Forum and Doctoral Forum, were held both offline and online and broadcast live on CCTV.
