Professor Hu Jiabing from the SEEE is Elected to IET Fellow

Jan 15, 2019

News.hust.edu.cn (Correspondent: Gong Xuan) The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, Britain) announced its 2018 membership. Prof. Hu Jiabing of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of HUST was elected as Fellow in 2018.

The IET is the largest international professional institute in Europe and the second largest around the world (only next to the IEEE). It was formed by the combination of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) in early 2006. The IET’s professional classifications cover 5 major industries, including energy and power, transportation, information and communication, design and manufacturing, and architectural environment and involves over 40 professional fields. Currently, the IET has a membership of about 167,000 from 150 countries around the world.

As the highest academic honor of the IET, IET Fellow is awarded to outstanding professional technicians who have shown a high sense of responsibility and made important achievements in science and engineering technology. The IET selects about 300 fellows each year, including 20–30 from the Chinese mainland.

Professor Hu Jiabing, a senior member of the IEEE, works as a doctoral tutor, the convener of the IEC SC8A JWG5 Working Group and an expert of the WG1/AHG3 Working Group. He received his bachelor’s and doctor’s degrees from Zhejiang University in 2004 and 2009 respectively; he held a postdoctoral position at the University of Sheffield from October 2009 to August 2011 and joined HUST in September 2011. He took the position of deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Electromagnetic Engineering and Technology in June 2018. He is one of the winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation. He has led 4 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation (2 excellent conclusions), 1 national key R&D program and 1 joint integration program (major); participated in 2 projects of the 973 Program (including 1 project by young scientists with an excellent conclusion) and 1 project of the Natural Science Foundation; won 4 provincial and ministerial awards; published over 50 SCI papers as the first/corresponding author (including 3 highly cited ESI papers) with an H index of 23; obtained over 20 invention patents (including 2 international invention patents);and published 1 treatise and 1 translation work. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple periodicals, such as IEEE Trans. Energy Conversion (TEC), IEEE Power Engineering Letters and IET Renewable Power Generation (RPG). He has been appointed as special editor-in-chief for periodicals, such as IETEC, IET RPG, the Proceedings of the CSEE and Automation of Electric Power Systems. He was selected by Elsevier as one of the Most Cited Chinese Researchers (in the field of electrical and electronic engineering) in 2016 and 2017. His research subjects include the dynamic modeling and analysis of electronic power systems; large-scale grid-connected renewable energy power generation equipment and control; and the control and network analysis of HVDC flexible equipment.

Relying on the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Electromagnetic Engineering and Technology, Professor Hu Jiabing worked with Professor Yuan Xiaoming to establish the Research Center for Semiconducting Power Systems in 2011, which is committed to providing theoretical methods and technical support for the safe and stable operation of semiconductor power systems. In recent years, the research center has undertaken a number of national major/key scientific research programs and international collaboration projects, including 1 project of the 973 Program, 1 major integration project sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation and the State Grid, 1 major project (subject) funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, 1 research project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation in cooperation with the German Research Association and 2 national key R&D projects (subjects). The “Renewable Energy Grid Connection Disposal” team, led by Professor Yuan Xiaoming, was listed among the innovative teams of the 2016 Innovative Talents Promotion Program, which was initiated by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
