HUST Won 14th 'Big Challenge Cup'

Dec 22, 2015

The 14th National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Contest (hereinafter referring to as “Challenge Cup”) was held at Guangdong University of Technology. In the final contest, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) won the only special award in Hubei province and was for the 13rd time awarded as excellent team.

All of the six works in HUST went through to the final contest and got the prizes (one for special award, one for the first prize, three for the second prize and one for the third prize).

Over 2 million college students from more than 2000 universities directly took part in the Challenge Cup this year. In the preliminary contest, 1569 works from 528 universities was involved and finally, 783 works from 318 universities were selected to attend the final contest. The works included 11 disciplines which are mathematics, information, life science, energy and chemical industry, mechanical engineering and control, philosophy, economy, society, law, education and management. Nearly 100 experts leaded by academicians were invited to compose evaluation committee to assess the works in the contest.

“The Challenge Cup” is a pioneering national competition jointly organized by Communist Youth League of China, China Association of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, All-China Students’ Federation and local governments and cooperated with China’s well-known Universities and news media. The challenge cup consists of two competitions: one is “National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Contest” and the other one is National Business Plan Competition”, which was later reformed to be “China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition”, first hosted by HUST, who won the cup. Those two competitions were held every two years by turns. The Challenge Cup has become the largest and most influential scientific and innovative competition for Chinese university students with the reputation as an academic science and technology “Olympic” event.

It is also reported that on Nov.22nd, the main component of this year’s “Challenge Cup, “Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit”, was held at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation of young college students, the summit attracted a number of teachers and students from universities in and abroad, which turned out to escalate international influence of the Challenge Cup. HUST Vice President Xu Xiaodong was invited to address the summit with a report about “The Construction of Three Systems-Bring Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education into the Whole Process of Professional Personnel Cultivation”, systematically introduced the related efforts done by HUST.

Attached are the awarded works and information of team members:

“NC Machining & 3D Printing Compound Machine with High Precision and Integrated Structure” (Special Award)
Project Introduction: The team members invent a NC Machining & 3D Printing Compound Machine which realizes the high-precision and integration of complex machine parts processing through alternative operation of those two techniques. Basic idea: Members research into software platform and import a model. Then the platform automatically generates complicated machining paths and they optimize that. They also design automatic tool changing device and a double-layer porous fixture in order to realize the automatic shift of processing methods and the fixed holding of complex machine parts. Thus, they finally establish a processing procedure described as “automatic printing then NC machining then printing again”.

“From being enforced to living in residential buildings to peasants moving into residential building voluntarily -----a survey into the implement of pilot Pothook Policy of City Construction Land Increase and Rural Residential Land Decrease in Shayang County in Hubei Province, China” (The First Prize)
Project Introduction: That project is the only one in HUST to take part in social science competition with research report and academic thesis. It aims to describe the implement method of Pothook Policy in Shayang County, analyze the causes of policy alienation in other areas and research into the reason why the effects of policy show obvious differences in different areas. Then the members summarize a general process model of the Pothook Policy and provide experience and advice for its implementation.

“Aero-engine Turbine Blade Non-contact Optical Detector” (The Second Prize)
Project Introduction: Based on high-efficient line-structured light detect theory, the team makes a breakthrough in algorithm used to locate the center of laser stripe which can make rapid and precise detect of blade while proving measurement accuracy. The work mainly consists of measuring sensors such as laser emitter and camera, worktable on which there is an electric liner platform with vertical movement and an electric rotating table with horizontal rotation and operating and data processing software. The crucial techniques and the creative inventions are a new algorithm aimed at locating the center of laser stripe, a large scene depth measuring sensor and independently programmed control and data processing software.

“High Sensitive Ambient Gas Sensor with Low Energy Consumption Based on Quantum Pots” (The Second Prize)
Project Introduction: Team members set colloidal quantum dots with a distinct gas sensitive effect as core sensitive material and take advantage of its characteristics of its large surface area and high surface activity. They then combine methods such as quantum pots surface modification and optimization of sensor producing technology to overcome bottlenecks of nowadays development of gas sensors. Finally, they should create sensor prototype device with stable performance index to promote the application of gas sensor to alarm system for civil use, public transportation, environment protection and protection of cultural relics, and meet the needs of the development of internet of things as well as internet plus.

“The Preparation of a New TPGS Nano-drug with High-efficient Ability to Reverse Drug Resistance on Tumor” (The Second Prize)
Project Introduction: Making druggability and the ability to reverse drug resistance of tumor as key parameters, the team chooses TPGS, a pharmaceutical adjuvant approved by FDA in US as a core carrier for the new Nano-drug in the project. Members design sensitive chemical bonds which would show specific responses in tumor’s microenvironment to couple both chemotherapy drugs and carriers. They observe the stability of that new Nano-drug and research into the drug delivery in vitro and in vivo and its metabolic behavior. Moreover, they make animal models and conduct efficacy tests. In conclusion, the project develops an innovation of new carriers and coupling methods.

“Sunlight Flexible Conduction and Lighting System Based on New Hollow-core Fiber” (The Third Prize)
Project Introduction: Starting from optimizing sunlight collecting device, team members try to get a patent which is sunlight collecting and conduction device based on hollow-core flexible light pipe. Thus, they tackle the difficulties of both small aperture angle of light and low efficiency in sunlight coupling with solid-core fiber as well as hardness for rigid light pipe to achieve flexible light conduction from many floors. The accomplishment of that new conduction and lighting system can largely increase aperture angle of light and improve light pipe coupling efficiency while keeping flexible light conduction of light pipe and reducing transmission loss, finally contributing to flexible conducting lighting with low sunlight loss, high efficiency and full spectrum.
