The 8th International Photonics and OptoElectronics Meetings (POEM 2015) were held officially in Ramada Plaza Optics Valley Hotel, Wuhan on June 17.
Prof. Michael Graetzel gave the openning speech on behalf of the conference co-chairs. Xinliang Zhang briefly outlined the schedule and the attendants.Four plenary presentations have been delivered respectively by Prof. Deen M. Jamal from McMaster University( report titled Bioimagers-Life at the Intersection of Engineering and Science); Prof. Nam-Gyu Park from Sungkyunkwan University( report titled Perovskite Solar Cell: Present and Future); Prof. Chan CT of Hong Kong University Science & Technology (report titled Consequence of Dirac-like Cone Dispersions in Optics); Prof.Sang Il Seok, of Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology( report titled Architecture, Process, and Materials for Efficient Perovdkite Solar Cell).
POEM 2015 included two OSA Topical Meetings: optoelectronic devices and integration (OEDI) and Photonics for Energy (PFE). Prof. Jesper Moerk, of Technical University of Denmark, and Prof. Xinliang Zhang, served as the co-chairs of OEDI topical meeting. Prof. Zhonglin Wang and Professor Michael Graetzel co-chaired the PFE topical meeting.
OEDI covered topics as silicon photonics, surface plasma and plasmonics, optoelectronic devices, nonlinear optical devices, polymer devices, radio over fiber related devices, free-space communications related devices, optoelectronic monolithic integration and hybrid integration, and optical vortex devices and subsystems. PFE covered topics as energy generation (mesoscopic, organic, quantum dot and thin film solar cells, nanogenerators), energy conversion (inorganic/organic light emitting diodes, piezo-phototronics) and energy storage.
Previously, Professor M. Jamal Deen presented a report titled Integration Research and Facilities at McMasterin, and, Professor Michael Graetzel presented a report titled Mesoscopic Photosystems for the generation of electricity and fuels.
At the Awarding Dinner held in the evening of 17, June, 5 students were named winners of Best Student Paper Awards; 5 won Outstanding Poster paper Awards; 4 students were issued POEM 2015 Travel Awards-- K.C. Wong Education Foundation by Professor Michael Graetzel.
On June 18, the "International Investing Conference for Photonics and Optoelectronics Technology Transfer" was held. 15 projects were selected by professional coaching team. More than a hundred investors attended. The conference was expected to create a professional innovative technology transferring capital platform, thus to help potential research teams to realize their business dreams .
The POEM has been launched by WNLO with seven successful precedents, which has become a mass, multi-disciplinary, comprehensive and high level brand of optical international conference.
2015 marks an important milestone in the history of optics and optical technologies: the 1000th anniversary of the appearance of the remarkable seven volume treatise on optics Kitab al-Manazir written by the Arab scientist Ibn al-Haytham; two hundred years of Fresnel’s Wave Theory; one hundred and fifteen years of Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory of light propagation; one hundred years of Albert Einstein’s famous field equations of General Relativity; fifteen years of Penzias and Wilson’s discovery of cosmic microwave background; in the same year Kao proposed transmission of light in optical fibers. Therefore, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) on December 20th, 2013.
Thus, the Wuhan Photonics Week was held the same time for celebration. Wuhan Photonics Week hosted programs as the Collaborative Innovation Symposiums for Photonics (CISP), the 5th Sino-French Forum: Optical Information and Photonics-Electronics Conversion Technique, Cross-strait Optoelectronics Forum, The International Investing Conference for Photonics Optoelectronics Technology Transfer, Annual Meeting of OSA/SPIE Student Chapters in China & Innovation Venture Competition, Workshop on Development of Optics Journal, Nature Master Classes, Training Courses and Expo, etc.
The Opening Ceremony was held on the afternoon of June 13. Chaohui Ye, the director of WNLO, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, announced opening and gave a report titled "Precision Measurement of Physics Development Driving Force". Then a series of collaborative innovation symposiums was held.
The theme of the conference covers most research directions in the field of photonics and optoelectronics, providing participants with an academic feast. A series of high-end academic and industry seminars, bilateral forums, innovative entrepreneurship competition and technology exhibition were opened to the scientists, entrepreneurs and students worldwide. They shared the latest developments in science and technology and industry trends and there will be a number of innovative technologies coming into industrial application. Wuhan photonics Week activities attracted nearly a thousand participants, promoted the combination of research and industry and academic conference diversity.
The Wuhan Photonics Week is supported by International Commission for Optics (ICO), the Optical Society (OSA), the international Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), IEEE Photonics Society (Singapore and Hongkong Chapters), Institute of Physics (IOP), Laser Institute of America (LIA) and Chinese Optical Society (COS) etc.
The activities of Photonics Week are continuously focused by IYL global website www.light2015.org, European Physical Society (EPS), OSA, SPIE, COS, Natureevents.com and ScienceNet.cn, Chinese Sciencemeeting online, Opticsjournal.net, China optoelectronics magazine, Frontiers of optoelectronics, Journal of Optics & Optoelectronic Technology etc.
