The 6th Board Meeting of the Confucius Institute at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais(CI-UFMG) was held on December 7, 2018 at Huazhong University of Science & Technology(HUST). CHEN Jianguo, Vice President of HUST and Deputy Chair of the CI-UFMG Board attended the meeting.
The meeting was hosted by LIU Junhua, Director of HUST School of International Education. Among the attendees were: Dawisson Elvécio Belém Lopes, Deputy Director of UFMG International Relations Office, Barbara Malveira Orfano, Brazilian Director of CI-UFMG, XU Mingwu, Dean of HUST School of Foreign Languages, OUYANG Hongbing, Vice Dean of HUST School of Economics, HE Gang, Deputy Director of HUST International Exchange Center, and CHENG Jin Chinese Director of CI-UFMG.
CHEN Jianguo highly praised the achievements the CI-UFMG has made since its establishment in November 2013, meanwhile expressed gratitude to UFMG for its care for Chinese teachers and volunteers. CHEN Jianguo said that he and other board members have just attended the 13th Confucius Institute Conference in Chengdu.
During the conference, Vice premier SUN Chunlan delivered the keynote speech on “Facilitating the new development through reform and innovation; forging a brighter future with concerted efforts”. LI Yuanyuan, the Council member of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and the president of Huazhong University of Science and Technology held conversations with participants from overseas Confucius Institutes, pointing out that the establishment of Confucius Institutes corresponded with the global tendency of “peace, development, cooperation and win-win”; the Confucius Institute has become an important platform for the opening up and cooperation of higher educational institutions of different countries, and it has facilitated cooperation between universities, enhanced people-to-people exchange, and promoted friendship among people. We are committed to developing the Confucius Institute, promoting cooperation with the partner university and achieving joint development.
During the meeting, the 2018 work report of CI-UFMG and 2019 work plan, presented by Barbara and CHENG Jin, were reviewed, discussed and approved by general consent. The achievements made by CI-UFMG were highly affirmed, such as its efforts to integrate with development plan of UFMG, to carry out Chinese teaching, to serve the community, and to make contribution to enhancing friendship between China and Brazil. The CI-UFMG is expected to continually play its role as a cultural exchange platform and to promote more in-depth cooperation between the two universities, under the work of the directors.
The CI-UFMG was set up in November 2013. In 2018 its enrollment reached 590 students. The Board is the supervisory body of the CI-UFMG, which holds meeting at least once every year.
The Brazilian guests visited HUST History Museum, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, where Prof. NIU Guangda presented research development in nano and energy optoelectronics, and the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, where Prof. LOU Chun introduced the China-Brazil project cooperation of Research Center on three-dimensional monitoring on biomass combustion.
