Suppression of runaway electrons in magnetically confined fusion plasma
Mainly completed by: Chen Zhongyong, Yan Wei and Pan Yuan
At present, the primary scientific and technological problem which hinders the research and development of fusion energy lies in how to suppress the escaping electrons during plasma disruption. Escaping electrons could incur melting or even damage the first wall materials of the magnetic confinement fusion device. The technology of resonant magnetic perturbation developed by the team achieves complete suppression (100%) of runaway electrons and cascading protection of rapid dissipation of runaway current. In 2020, the J-TEXT device in HUST managed to rank among the four major devices for fragmentation mitigation selected by the Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) of ITER, with the other three being DIII-D in the United States, KSTAR in South Korea, and JET in EU.

The emission control technology of PM2.5 from coal-fired power plants
Mainly completed by: Yu dunxi, Liu Xiaowei and Chen Sheng
Atmospheric PM2.5 pollution seriously endangers the ecological environment and human health. The project focuses on coal-fired power plants – an important PM2.5 emission source, and devised the solution of a coal-fired PM2.5 generation control technology based on a high-efficiency absorbent to inhibit the generation of PM2.5 during combustion, nipping the emission in the bud. This technology marks a new breakthrough in the traditional post combustion physical dust removal technology. The technology also has the function of synergistic removal of other pollutants and mitigation of slagging and fouling in the boilers. Supported by national key R & D projects, it has been successfully applied in the world’s largest coal-fired unit for the first time and its promotion and application in the future is of great significance.
