News.hust.edu.cn (Correspondents: Wu Song, Li Jian)The flagship publication of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Communications of the ACM (Five-year Impact Factor 5.290) published in November, released on its website a study report on China’s cloud computing “Cloud Bursting for the World's Largest Consumer Market” co-written by the team of Professor Jin Hai from the School of Computer Science and Technology HUST and several well-known domestic scholars in cloud computing. Jin Hai is the first author and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is the first publisher. Professor Wu Song, a member of the team, also participated in compilation.
On November 22, the authoritative publication ACM Computing Surveys (Five-year Impact Factor 8.012) released an article titled “A Manifesto for Future Generation Cloud Computing: Research Directions for the Next Decade” jointly authored by global top scientists in cloud computing for a year to reflect their outlook for the development trend of cloud computing in the next decade. Jin Hai, as the only scientist from China, has also been engaged throughout the task. Marking a significant footprint of HUST and Jin Hai's team in the field of cloud computing. These two research tasks play a key role in allowing global researchers to understand the features of China’s cloud computing technology and its future trends.
Cloud computing, as a novel computing paradigm, is ushering us into a new revolution of information technology and has overturned people’s way of production and living. As the cornerstone of the information industry, cloud computing underpins various applications such as Internet of Things, big data and artificial intelligence. Considering the significance of clout computing, the state has listed cloud computing as a key national strategic emerging industry in the “13th Five-Year Plan” and indicated strong support and development for it. Rooted in key strategic technical needs of the country and relying on two projects of the “973 program” in cloud computing (“Fundamental Theory and Method Study on the Virtualization of Computing System” and “Fundamental Theory and Method Study on the Security of Cloud Computing”), Jin Hai’s team has conducted in-depth study and exploration into the system, architecture, and security of cloud computing, and produced an array of representative outcomes that lead the entire industry. He has provided staunch technical support and theoretical guidance for the rapid development of our cloud computing industry.
In the two research theses released lately, the author comprehensively recaps and profoundly analyzes the development status, industrial features, technical trends and development plan of China's cloud computing. As indicated by the theses, China boasts the largest population of netizens and IT practitioners, the best mobile communication infrastructure, the greatest demands for super applications (such as “Red Packet on WeChat” and “Double 11 Online Shopping Festival”), as well as fast technological revolution and upgrade in mobile Internet, Internet of Things and e-commerce. The basic reality determines that China’s infrastructure for cloud computing must have three features: driven by super applications, deep system integration and optimization and high scalability of platform. The theses also interpret on the future deployment and planning of Chinese government and enterprises in cloud computing. Meanwhile, the theses summarize future technologies, applications and industrial development of cloud computing, explain in simple terms the opportunities and challenges of cloud computing in the future when confronting vessels, edge/fog computing, serverless computing, blockchain, machine learning and Internet of Things. They point out the direction for cloud computing technologies in the next decade.
Report has it that the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) decided to title Jin Hai an IEEE Fellow on November 21 as a recognition of his great contribution to the cloud computing field. This is also our first fellow in IEEE Computer Society, the biggest society under IEEE.
