Professor Dongrui Wu from School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation wins 2020USERN Prize

Nov 13, 2020

On November 10th, Professor Dongrui Wu of the School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation won the USERN Prize in Formal Sciences at the 5th USERN awards ceremony. Held in Tehran, Iran, this ceremony witnessed the first Chinese scientist to be awarded the prize. The prize-winning project, Signal Processing and Machine Learning for Calibration-free and Secure Brain-Computer Interfaces, is mainly about transfer learning, active learning and anti-attack of brain-computer interface (BCI). Professor Wu has been researching the field since 2016. Due to the requirements of pandemic prevention, the Chinese ambassador to Iran received the Professor’s award on his behalf.

USERN, short for Universal Scientific Education and Research Network, is a non-governmental and non-profit organization established in 2016. On November 10th every year, Worlds’ Science Day for Peace and Development, the USERN Prize is bestowed on five young scholars who have made innovative contributions in formal science, physical and chemical sciences, biological science, medical science and social science.

This year, more than 13,000 researchers around the world, having published papers in Q1 between 2019 and 2020, were nominated. More than 350 researchers entered the formal accreditation stage. The USERN Advisory Committee are comprised of the top 1% of scientists in all fields, including 16 Nobel Prize winners and 2 Abel prize winners. Due to COVID-19, this year's award ceremony was held both online and offline.

The other four winners are Lianne Schamaal (Australia) in Social Sciences | for: A Global Alliance to Elucidate Neurobiological Signatures of Depression and SuicideMohammad Ali Shahbazi (Finland) in Medical Sciences | for: A Thermo-responsive Biopolymeric Microimplant for the Treatment of Autoimmune DisordersDaniel Sauter (Germany) in Biological Sciences | for: Deciphering molecular determinants of coronavirus spread in the human populationGregory Mark Allen Ashton (Australia) in Physical and Chemical Sciences | for: Black holes and neutron stars: enabling astrophysics with Bilby.

Professor Dongrui Wu is now Professor and Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Image Processing and Intelligent Control. His major research interests include: machine learning (transfer learning, active learning, deep learning, interpretability, etc.); and brain-computer interface (calibration, security, privacy, etc.) and its application (epilepsy detection and localization, wearable devices, etc.). Besides, he has published 27 papers as corresponding author or with HUST as the primary affiliation, among which 21 are from IEEE, and the others from domestic journals including National Science Review, Journal of Automation. Some of these research findings have been transferred or commercialized by enterprises. Since entering the university, Professor Wu has also won many other awards and honors such as: the first Young Scientist Award of IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society in 2017 (the only winner since the award was established 7 years ago); the Best Associate Editor Award of IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine System in 2018; the title of Outstanding Youth of Hubei Province in 2020; and the Best Paper Award of IEEE Microelectronics and Control Conference in 2020. He has guided students to win the International Competition of Network Intrusion Detection of IEEE WCCI in 2018, and the national first prize of the Technical Competition of the third Chinese Brain-Computer Interface Competition in 2019. Those achievements have been reported by many websites and media outlets including: Digital Trends, TechXplore, Geeks, Chinanews, Changjiang Daily and Caixin Weekly.
