International Profile
Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has long welcomed a wide range of international partnerships and exchanges. In fact, it has entered into cooperative relationships with 246 foreign universities and institutions from 41 countries and regions around the world.
To further improve international education quality, HUST continuously strives to invite high-quality academic partners and to establish sino-foreign cooperatively-managed schools. It was HUST that established, on its home campus, one of the first four such exemplary schools in China: the School of Engineering Sciences. Its China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy (ICARE) was listed among the 40 best examples of China-EU cooperation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Europe.
In recent years, HUST has invested much to facilitate cooperative research programs at the state, provincial and university levels. With the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), it has initiated six state-level international centers for science and technology. With the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE), it has also established two state-level joint international laboratories, as well as eight international science and technology cooperation centers in Hubei Province. HUST currently leads 33 key international cooperation projects included in MOST’s National Key Research and Development Program.
Driven by high-quality education and scientific research platforms mentioned above, personnel exchanges between HUST and its foreign partners has increased significantly. Every year, HUST receives around 1,800 visits – both long-term and short-term – and organizes more than 2,000 overseas exchange visits for the university’s faculty and staff. In addition, over 3,000 HUST students typically study abroad each year.
HUST also attaches great importance to the presence of international students, which it has actively recruited since the early 1960s. Over that period, it has trained over 10,000 international students from more than 160 countries and regions around the world. It has also jointly built three Confucius Institutes in the United States, New Zealand, and Brazil to teach the Chinese language and conduct educational and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. These institutes receive around 15,000 registered students each year.
