As a research-intensive university, HUST is renowned for both its advanced research facilities and its academic achievements. HUST manages four National Laboratory/National Science Centers, including the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (one of the six national labs in China), the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center (National Science Center), the Center for Gravitational Experiments (National Science Center) and the National Innovation Institute of Digital Design and Manufacturing. In addition, its research capacity extends to many other high level research facilities, including:

In recent years, an increasing number of high quality academic papers cited by the science citation index (SCI), the engineering index (EI), the technology conference record index (ISTP) and the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLARS) have been published by HUST researchers. HUST consistently ranks among the top ten universities in China in terms of high-quality papers published in leading international journals.
