The Institute for Parallel and Distributed Computing is an important supporting unit of the national key discipline of "Computer System Architecture", with main research on system software and architecture, distributed systems, cyberspace security, big data, and big data of man-computer-object fusion. There are 33 full-time faculty members consisting of 13 professors, 1 researcher and 16 associate professors, and more than 300 graduate students.

The institute has an innovation team in key fields of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the leading unit of the innovation team of the Ministry of Education, and the innovation team of the Hubei Provincial Natural Science Foundation. It has 3 selectees for the "National Talent Program", 4 selectees for the "National Young Talent Program", 3 selectees for the "New Century Excellent Talents Program" initiated by the Ministry of Education, and 8 selectees for the "Provincial and Municipal Talent Program".

The institute has taken the lead in undertaking several critical national programs, for example, the National Program on Key Basic Research Project of China (973 Program), the Major Program initiated by the Ministry of Education, the National Key Technology Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, National Science and Technology Major Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the National Key Research and Development Program, Program of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, Major Research Plan, Key Program, International Cooperation, and General Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Chinese National Programs for High Technology Research and Development (863 Program), the GNGI Program initiated by National Development and Reform Commission, and international cooperation program undertaken by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In addition, it has won 5 national science and technology achievement awards and gained more than 30 American invention patents and more than 400 national invention patents.

The institute has 5 national or provincial science and technology platforms, namely, the primary node of ChinaGrid, the node of China National Grid (Wuhan), the Key Laboratory of Service Computing Technology and System of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Cluster and Grid Computing of Hubei Province, and Hubei Engineering Laboratory of Big Data Technology and System.
