The School of Computer Science and Technology of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established in 1997. Its predecessor was the School of Information Science and Engineering (founded in 1973) of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Huazhong Institute of Technology). After nearly 50 years of construction and development, it has become an essential base for personnel training and scientific research in the field of computer science and technology in China. The School of Computer Science and Technology subject evaluation is level A by the Ministry of Education. And Computer Science and Technology is one of the key construction disciplines selected as "Double First-Class" by the Ministry of Education.

The School of Computer Science and Technology is allowed to confer the first-level doctoral degree in Computer Science and Technology, and consists of four second-level disciplines: Computer Architecture, Computer Software and Theory, Computer Application Technology, and Information Security. Among them, Computer Architecture is a national key discipline and a characteristic discipline of Hubei Universities.

Currently, the School of Computer Science and Technology has 136 full-time teachers, including 45 professors and 61 associate professors. It has one innovation team from the National Foundation of China, three innovation teams from the Ministry of Education, one innovation team from the Ministry of Science and Technology, and one innovation team from Hubei Province.

The School of Computer Science and Technology has 5 research institutes in distributed computing, data storage, digital media, data engineering, artificial intelligence and optimization, and 11 national-level and provincial-level research bases including the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Big Data Technology and Systems. Four high-tech enterprises including Dameng Database have been incubated. The scientific research of the School of Computer Science and Technology has always been at the forefront of the discipline and has had an important impact on the development of distributed computing and information storage. It has formed its characteristics in the fields of modern database theory and technology, digital media, network systems, information security, and NP difficulty problem-solving. The School of Computer Science and Technology has actively undertaken several important scientific research tasks including major national science and technology projects and achieved a series of high-level research results including the second prize of the National Natural Science Award, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and the second prize of the National Technology Invention Award.

The School of Computer Science and Technology adheres to the "system-oriented, hard-soft collaborated" concept of talent training for talents with full-stack systematic ability, and builds multiple online and offline national first-class courses. It won a lot of prizes including the first prize in national, provincial, and ministerial teaching achievements, the overall championship of 2016 ASC World Supercomputing, first place in the 2017 SAT International Algorithm Competition, the 2021 Graph Computing Challenge Global Championship, and the 2021 EDA International Algorithm Competition Global Championship. The School of Computer Science and Technology has also cultivated a large number of innovative talents, including the talents of Huawei Genius.

The college is firmly rooted in traditional Chinese culture, red culture, and the campus culture of HUST, adhering to the excellent character of "dare to compete and good at transformation" as the talent of computer science and technology. Combining with the characteristics of the discipline, the School of Computer Science and Technology has formed the "TIME" discipline culture in the new era, which is the abbreviation of Teamwork, Innovation, Morality, and Exploration.

The college adheres to the strategic needs of the country and has formed the "14th Five-Year Plan" and new construction plans for the "first-class" discipline. The School of Computer Science and Technology "fights for the day and lives up to the times", working together to build a "world-class discipline of computer science and technology with Chinese characteristics".
